Clinic in Kenya
Poona based Grant Medical Foundation’s Ruby Hall Clinic (RHC) has entered into an agreement to open a multi-speciality hospital in Kenya, to be named Ruby Hall Clinic — Nairobi, according to a press note dated August 5, 2016 received by Parsiana.
The $ 95 million (Rs 635 crore) project set across five acres of land is a consultancy agreement "with Africa Medicity, a newly formed company of non-healthcare professionals,” elaborates the press note. Construction of the 400-bed facility is slated to begin by November this year with a completion target of two years. RHC — Nairobi will be supported by state-of-the-art diagnostic tools while complementing other local healthcare units in fulfilling their objectives to better serve the needs of the community, states the write-up. The main focus will be oncology and cardiology. Emphasizing that this is not a "simple consulting project, but a long-term relationship that will empower healthcare across the continent” (Africa), Bomi Bhote, chief executive officer (CEO) of RHC is quoted in the press note that the Clinic is "focussed on expanding in Africa which is a virgin market for healthcare.”
"This is an absolutely unique concept never done earlier in India wherein we would be exporting knowledge to Kenya,” states Bhote in an email dated August 16, 2016, in response to Parsiana’s questions. The memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the two parties was signed during the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and in the presence of the President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta he informs. Bhote was part of the delegation that accompanied Modi to that country between July 9 and 13, 2016.

According to the CEO, the collaboration is based on technology and know-how and RHC will offer consultancy in "designing and equipping the hospital, selecting the personnel and training them in Poona” till they are self sufficient in running the hospital with their own citizens.
"Capacity building in areas such as healthcare is at the core of India’s relationship building with African nations. Our aim is to ensure tertiary healthcare services even for the last man living in the remotest village of Kenya,” Bhote was quoted in a report in The Times of India dated August 10, 2016.
RHC was set up in 1959 by the late Dr Keki Grant, a cardiologist and founder Fellow of the Indian College of Physicians who, in the 1960s, converted it into a public charitable trust that runs a 700-bed facility in the western Maharashtra city. The Foundation is managed by a board of seven trustees, including Dr Parvez Grant, the founder’s son. Poona’s first hospital accredited by NABH (National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Health providers), RHC currently runs from two locations — Sassoon Road and Wanowrie, both in Poona. The latter is one of the first ‘green hospitals’ in the country. A third 100-bedded multi-speciality hospital at Hinjewadi is "up and running through trial runs at present and should start full-fledged functioning within the next fifteen days to one month,” states Bhote in the email.
