Milestones
The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 27 and 41 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 34 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 28 and 42 years, averaging at 37 years.
The last few names of those deceased in end June 2016 find mention here as well as those who passed away till July 13.
Data on only four births in Bombay (from the one south Bombay hospital) for June 2016 was received by Parsiana while 62 deaths were reported from Doongerwadi (information supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet).
The main cause of death, as always, was attributed to heart related diseases which felled 22 victims. Fourteen of them were over the 80 year age bracket. The next major killer was pneumonia/lung disease taking the lives of 10 Zoroastrians. Seven patients fell prey to old age/general debility, six to cancer and four to septicemia. Diabetes and kidney failure were cited as the causes of deaths for three persons each. Intestinal obstruction, hyperpyrexia (body temperature above 105°F), hypertension, septicemia, anemia, cachexia (malnutrition), hemiplegia (paralysis of half of the body), exacerbation (increased severity of symptoms) and multi organ failure were isolated causes of deaths. A male, aged 39, the youngest to breathe his last, was a victim of a road accident. The eldest to perish was also a male, two years short of his centenary. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for June 2016 in Bombay was 81 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by one hospital — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
