Centenary scholar

Dr Natasha Sarosh Bala (pictured) was adopted by the N. M. Wadia Charities (NMWC) as their centenary scholar at a function held at the Homi J. H. Taleyarkhan Memorial Hall in Bombay on October 30, 2009 when she was a medical student. The five-year scholarship of Rs 50,000 per annum enabled her to study pediatric epilepsy at Rainbow Babies and Children Hospital, University Hospital, Case Western Reserve University in the US in 2015. She has also given presentations on important pediatric neurology topics in Cleveland, notes an email received from solicitor Burjor Antia, chairman of the NMWC.
Bala completed her MBBS in 2014 and did her internship with Seth G. S. Medical College of King Edward Memorial Hospital in Bombay in the following year. With the scholarship extended by the NMWC she was able to pursue clinical medical electives in the USA including at Yale University School of Medicine in pediatric infectious diseases in February 2014 and pediatric endocrinology at Boston Floating Hospital, Tufts University in the following month. She did an elective in newborn medicine (neonatology) from Boston’s Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School a month later.
The NMWC, a public charitable trust, came into existence in 1909 as per provisions of the will of Nowroji Maneckji Wadia, a leading businessman of Bombay. Providing medical relief, educational assistance and relief from poverty, as part of its centenary celebrations the trust published the second edition of an All India Directory of Parsi Institutions giving information about anjumans, agiaries, associations, clubs, schools, colleges, dharamshalas, hospitals, libraries, museums, public halls, baugs, etc. The trust also presented cash gifts to priests in Udvada and meals for inmates of widows’ chawls.
