Cardiac care for kids
"Our Hospital used to refer seven to eight patients a week to KEM Hospital and other private hospitals. Now, we are proud to have cardiac surgery at our own institution,” said Dr Ashwini Jogade, medical superintendent of the Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital for children, Parel. The Hospital recently performed its first heart operation, mentioned The Times of India (TOI) on November 30, 2013. The Hospital was established in 1929 with 300 beds, as an act of philanthropy by Ness and Cusrow Wadia in memory of their mother, Jerbai.
The Hospital plans to upgrade its facilities to include a cardiac operation theater with a catheterization laboratory. Though every year two lakh babies are born with congenital heart problems in India, until recently there were inadequate pediatric care facilities in Bombay with only three hospitals active in providing it — KEM Hospital in Parel, Kokilaben Ambani Hospital in Andheri and Fortis Hospital in Mulund — according to TOI. The Wadia cardiac care initiative is supported by the Healing Little Hearts Foundation set up by the India born British intensivist Dr Sanjiv Nichani, the newspaper concludes.
