A special wedding
The newspapers gave special space to a society wedding that took place recently. There was a Parsi style ceremony in Bombay and photographs show the groom wearing Parsi garb. Another Hindu ceremony took place in Madhya Pradesh subsequently.
What surprised and amused me is that none of the trustees (past or present) of the Bombay Parsi Punchayet (BPP) rushed to stop the proceedings in Bombay. Over the years the community has been screaming itself hoarse about the manner in which marriages to non-Parsis defile the religion. The BPP trustees, led by the World Alliance of Parsi Irani Zarthoshtis (WAPIZ) even debarred priests who agreed to perform ceremonies that did not meet with orthodox demands.
Perhaps the new set of trustees — though chaired by a WAPIZ founder — will set aside childish, old fashioned manmade rites and rituals and permit human beings to think and follow their own hearts and minds. JAMSHED IRANI
