Milestones
Names of contracting parties marrying out of the community have been culled from the registers seen at the Old Customs House (OCH) at Fort and at Khar. However, those names that could not be identified as Zoroastrian have been deleted.
Interfaith unions numbered 16. The count at OCH was 11 and at Khar, five. There were no civil marriages during that period.
Thirteen Zoroastrians did not wish to be consigned to the Doongerwadi and opted to be cremated at the Chandanwadi crematorium during the three month period.
Heart disease as usual was the main killer claiming six Zoroastrians, Three of the six were over the 80 year benchmark. Next came lung disease/pneumonia which felled four patients. Hypertention and cancer took three lives each. Two each were victims of head injuries and diabetes. One death each was attributed to liver disease, urinary tract infection, Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body). The youngest and eldest to succumb were both males: one a 38-year-old, the other, 92. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for June 16-30 in Bombay was 76 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by one hospital — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
