Data on only four births in Bombay (from one south Bombay hospital) for the 15 day period was received by Parsiana while 27 deaths were reported from Doongerwadi (information supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet).
Due to the courts being closed for the summer holidays, Parsiana could not access the names of the couples who tied the knot during this period. The same will be published in a forthcoming issue.
Various diseases of the heart felled seven Zoroastrians of whom five had crossed 80 years. Three patients each succumbed to cancer, pneumonia/lung disease and multi organ failure. General debility/old age and hemiparesis (a slight paralysis or weakness of one half of the face or body) took the lives of two persons each. Isolated causes of deaths were due to brain disease, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, cachexia (a state of constitutional disorder, malnutrition and general ill health), cellulitis (inflammation of connective tissue) of the leg, hypothyroidism (a group of symptoms caused by the deficiency of thyroid secretion) and liver disease. Fifty-six and 97 were the youngest and eldest ages at death. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the last 15 days of April in Bombay, was 78 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
