Information on Dr Choksy
We are writing a book on the Bombay Plague of 1896. One of the heroes of that period was Khan Bahadur Dr Nusserwanji Hormusji Choksy who was in charge of the Infectious Diseases Hospital at Arthur Road in Bombay.
He was perhaps the only man to have observed the disease throughout its persistence from 1896 to the first decade of the new century, not as a policy maker or as a researcher, but as a humanitarian faced with an overwhelming crisis.
Judging from his many public communications, he was a fiery supporter of human rights under the near-fascist regime of late Victorian imperialism.
We are looking for more information on Choksy’s personal life. We would be especially interested in getting in touch with members of his family. Anything by way of anecdotes, photographs, genealogy, or even hearsay will be most welcome, and the source will be gratefully acknowledged in our book.
Choksy was not only an eminent doctor, but an inspiring individual in many ways, and we seek your help to celebrate his life.
