This column publishes milestones within the Zoroastrian community primarily for the latter half of April 2013.
Due to the courts being closed for the summer holidays, Parsiana could not access the names of the couples who tied the knot for this period. The same will be published in a forthcoming issue.
Four births and 29 deaths was the count for the last 15 days of April. Thirteen Zoroastrians were victims of various diseases of their ticker — 11 of them over 80 years. General debility/old age and cancer took a toll of three lives each whereas two Zoroastrians perished due to pneumonia/lung disease. Parkinson’s disease, dehydration due to diarrhoea, cellulitis (inflammation of connective tissues), hypertension, septicemia, Alzheimer’s disease, kidney failure and cachexia (a state of constitutional disorder, malnutrition and general illhealth) felled one patient each. A lady at 105 years was the eldest loss to the community, the youngest, a male, aged 59. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for April 16-30 in Bom­bay, was 81 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bom­bay Parsi Pun­chayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
