Twenty-five Zoroastrians opted to be consigned to the Bombay Towers of Silence while only three births were reported, all boys!
Heart disease claimed five victims, all of them over 80 years of age. The other killers were: pneumonia/lung disease and cancer (four each), kidney failure (three) and brain disease (two). Isolated causes of death were: ulcer, hypertension, liver disease, septicemia, cachexia (a state of constitutional disorder, malnutrition and general illhealth), urosepsis and old age/general debility. The eldest to perish was a female, aged 97; the youngest, a male at 52 years. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the first 15 days of April in Bombay, was 83 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
