Published in this Milestones column are births, marriages and deaths that occurred between February 16-28, 2013.
The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 22 and 34 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 28 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 25 and 37 years, averaging at 30 years.
Thirty-five Zoroastrians opted to be consigned to the Bombay Towers of Silence while only five births were reported. Sixteen persons were victims of heart related problems — 12 being over the age of 80. Cancer took the lives of four patients while septic shock claimed three. Two Zoroastrians each fell prey to old age/general debility and pneumonia/lung disease. Isolated lives were lost due to kidney failure, hypertension, urosepsis, multi organ failure, brain disease, liver disease, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Hundred was the highest age at death (a female); the youngest, a 59-year-old female. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the second fortnight of February in Bom­bay, was 81 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bom­bay Parsi Pun­chayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
