It was volley and thunder (from supporters!) as the crowds gathered for the 28th edition of the tournament! Organized by the DPCSWA (Dadar Parsi Colony Sports and Welfare Association) from May 15-20, 2012 at the traditional venue, now known as the Rustom Tirandaz Park, 16 teams in volleyball and 10 teams in throw ball battled it out in the annual floodlit competition.
In the volleyball finals, the DPCSWA team prevailed over the Spikers who have always been strong opponents. Says DPCSWA’s Rayomand Irani who was adjudged Player of the Finals: "We have been finalists in a number of tournaments over the last few years and we have played a lot of tough games against the Spikers. They were missing their captain Farhad Irani this year. He is a great player and entertainer! We are very strong on mind games, dodging to fool the blockers on the other side. I myself have matured as a player and moved from the ‘B’ team to the ‘A’ team.” DPCSWA’s Sohrab Bhiwandiwala won the honor of Upcoming Player.
The throw ball trophy was carried by the Malcolm Baug (Jogeshwari) team who beat C. J. Colony (Tardeo) in the finals. "We have been playing the other colonies’ teams and we know their strengths and weaknesses. We practice mainly during the May vacation,” says college student Vahishta Bharucha of Malcolm Baug who was declared the Player of the Finals in throw ball. "The competition was pretty tight. It is a package full of fun! I will surely play in future too,” asserts Meher Sethna of the Dadar Parsi Colony team who won the Upcoming Player prize. Sethna, who is a collegian, has been participating in throw ball matches from her school days and enjoys playing cricket and squash as well!

The other participating teams were from Cusrow, Rustom, Godrej and Nowroz Baugs, Cama Park, Dhunbai Wadi and a host of teams from the Dadar Parsi Colony. "The superb food court, ably managed by the supremely enterprising duo of Dinmeher Bunshah and Meher Mirza, was a runaway hit with the crowds eagerly awaiting a new menu every day,” states a description of the event from the organizers. The DPCSWA were once again triumphant despite the fact that many of their players carried the additional burden of being organizers. The organizing committee consisted of Jimmy Pardiwalla, Rayomand Irani, Karl Pandey (who was the captain of the winning volleyball team), Jamsheed Daruwala, Farhad Mogul, Homiyar Mistry and Kaizeen Mulla.
"The sponsors of the tournament were the ever supportive World Zoroastrian Organisation Trust Funds, kind courtesy Dinshaw and Bachi Tamboly, along with well-wishers (Colony residents) who have been associated with the event for many years,” the organizers note. The Tambolys were the chief guests and the tournament was inaugurated by Suresh Parab, senior inspector of the nearby Matunga police station thanks to the good offices of social activist Mehernosh Fitter, they add.
