Milestones

This column publishes milestones within the Zoroastrian community primarily for the former half of March 2012.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 23 and 36 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 29 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 28 and 40 years, averaging at 32 years.

An alarming divide was noticeable in the birth (two) and death (36) figures for the first 15 days of March. Heart disease took a toll of 10 lives, three of whom were 80 years and over. Four victims fell prey to lung disease/pneumonia. Three Zoroastrians died due to cancer whereas diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, old age/general debility, hypertension, hemiparesis (a slight paralysis or weakness of one half of the face or body) and brain disease took the lives of two patients each. Asthma, abdominal sepsis, gangrene of the foot, thrombocytopenia (a reduction in the number of platelets in the blood), gastro-intestinal hae­morr­hage, liver disease, cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder), kidney failure and multi organ failure were isolated causes of death. A 16-year-old youth was the youngest to breathe his last, the eldest, a 95-year-old lady. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians from March 1-15 in Bom­bay, was 75 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bom­bay Parsi Pun­chayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
