Milestones

Births, marriages and deaths taken place primarily in the former half of November 2010 are carried in this issue.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 25 and 33 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 29 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 26 and 38 years, averaging at 34 years.

As per the list of those consigned to Bombay’s Towers of Silence supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet there were 27 deaths. Births (deliveries taken place at only two south Bombay hospitals) numbered only four for the period of November 1-15. The killers were: heart disease (seven, two of whom were above 80 years), septicemia (three), diabetes, brain disease, old age/general debility and hypertension (two each). Respiratory tract infection, sepsis, Parkinson’s disease, multi organ failure, head injury, malaria, kidney failure, pneumonia/lung disease and myesthenia gravis (muscular weakness) claimed isolated victims. A stillborn baby boy was also lost to the community. The youngest and eldest to pass away were both males: one aged 66, the other, 98. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the first 15 days of November, in Bom­bay, was 78 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bom­bay Parsi Pun­chayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
