Milestones

Published in this Milestones column are births, marriages and deaths that occurred in the last fortnight of 2010.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 25 and 41 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 28 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 26 and 40 years, averaging at 30 years.

Births numbered a dismal one for December 16-31 versus forty-one Zoroastrians who were consigned to the Towers of Silence in Bombay for the same period. As usual the major killer was heart disease which took the lives of 14 patients. Twelve were in the 80 and above age category. The other killers were: lung disease/pneumonia and hypertension (five each), cancer (four) and general debility/old age and gastro-intestinal bleeding (two each). Urinary tract infection, Alzheimer’s disease, septicemia, multi organ failure, liver disease, hypoproteinmia (deficient protein in the blood plasma) and brain disease claimed isolated victims. One Zoroastrian succumbed to his head injuries caused by a road accident. A stillborn baby girl as well as a 22-year-old youth (the youngest to breathe her last) was also lost to the community. A centenarian (at 101 years) was the eldest to die! The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the last 15 days of December 2010, in Bombay, was 78 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.

If readers have any births/ marriages/deaths they would like published, some proof to ensure the veracity of the report would be required. We are sure our readers would appreciate this requirement and cooperate with us.
