Retaining old values

The generosity of our forefathers and leaders of our community offered aid, gifts and donations to the community at large (not just to Parsis) and this enabled others to say "Parsi, thy name is charity.” Now I read that the current leaders are saying, "Charity begins at home,” implying that it begins at home and stays there.
If each family decided to do that where would our community be? If each community decided to do so, would that make for a civilized society?
Let us keep our old values and not reform this aspect of what we are.
