Litter on the lawns

I was invited to a chaat (snacks with tangy chutneys) party at the Parsi Gymkhana some time back where perhaps 90 percent of the persons gathered were Parsis.
At the risk of being called a carping critic, I was dismayed at the amount of litter on the lawns. Both children and adults alike were guilty of spreading litter even though huge plastic bins had been placed at regular intervals.
It appears to me that our modernity stops at speaking in English all the time, wearing western outfits and western/jazz dancing.
We should display a high civic sense and show that we care for the environment, as is enshrined in our scriptures. The picture of filth is the last label that should stick.
