Milestones

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 23 and 38 years, the arithmetic mean (the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides) being 27 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 23 and 40 years, averaging at 30 years.

The first 15 days of the new year was a productive fortnight for the community with 15 births registered at the two hospitals that Parsiana gets its birth details from. On the other hand there were 43 deaths. Eighteen patients succumbed to heart disease. Eleven were 80 years and above. The other diseases that Zoroastrians fell prey to were lung disease/pneunomia (six), diabetes and old age/general debility (four each) and brain disease (two). Hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body), septicemia, polymyositis (inflammation of many muscles), cancer, gastroenteritis, haemolysis (disintegration of red blood cells), hypertension, sepsis and kidney failure were the isolated cases mentioned. A one-year-old baby boy and a 36-year-old male were also lost to the community. The eldest to breathe his last was a 97-year-old male. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the first half of January, in Bombay, was 76 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the breakup of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
