New look rainwear

Soon after her successful break designing dresses and gowns for participants in the May Queen ball held at Rustom Baug on May 1, 2009, 23-year-old designer Sonya Vajifdar, a former model, wondered how she would keep her trendy clothes from becoming soaked in the monsoon. Vajifdar certainly wasn’t planning to be out battling the rain with an overturned umbrella, nor would she been seen dead wearing a raincoat that made her look like a fireman, she informed Parsiana via e-mail. That’s when the idea of creating a line in designer rainwear hit her.
The result is a range of young and cool rainwear made from different varieties of waterproof plastic embellished with glitzy synthetic fabrics, beads and net put together in different cuts and styles. These are available in small, medium and large sizes designed for women, children and men. Whether it is drizzling or pouring, day or night, one can now step out looking fabulous in the enterprising designer’s elegant and stylish rainwear, being retailed currently at SOBO at Hughes Road and Attic in Santacruz (West) at prices ranging from Rs 3,000 to Rs 6,000, she mentions.

Even as a child Vajifdar’s sense of style stood out as she used her imagination and flair to create different looks. Putting a unique outfit together came naturally to her, reported Mid Day on May 27, 2009. After graduating, she headed for Milan, where she spent three years at the Instituto Europeo de Design. Interning at Estrele, a French fashion house, she helped style their 2007-08 Autumn/Winter lookbook and editorial shoot, writes Mid Day. Vajifdar returned to Bombay to fulfill her dream after graduating in fashion and textile design. She gained hands-on experience working for a while with fashion designer Nalandda Bhandari for the Bridal Asia show in Delhi and the Lakme Fashion Week in Bombay before deciding to launch her own label.
