Published in this Milestones column are births, marriages and deaths that occurred in the first fortnight of December 2007.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 21 and 37 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 27 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 24 and 38 years, averaging at 29 years.

Twenty-eight deaths and five births were recorded for the first half of December. Five Zoroastrians each were victims of hypertension and pneumonia/lung disease, which beat heart disease (which took a toll of three lives, two being above 80 years) to be the fortnight’s major killers. Septicemia, anemia, kidney failure, cancer and old age/general debility felled two patients each. Liver disease, obesity, malaria, splenic infarction (death of a section of tissue because the blood supply has been cut off), diverticulosis [a condition in which there are many diverticula (a pouch or sac protuding from the wall of a tube or hollow organ)], diabetes and brain disease were the isolated cases registered. The eldest to perish was a 101-year-old lady, the youngest, a 55-year-old male. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for December 1-15, in Bom­bay, was 80 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
