Milestones

Milestones data for the last 15 days of October 2006 are published herein.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 28 and 62 years, the arithmetic mean (the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides) being 41 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 27 and 75 years, averaging at 48 years.

Forty deaths and two births occured between the 15-day span. The usual major killer (heart disease) took the lives of eight Zoroastrians, four of whom were in the 80+ age category. The other killers were: pneu-monia/lung disease (seven), cancer (five), hypertension, brain disease and diabetes (three each) and kidney failure (two). The nine isolated causes of deaths were nervous disorder, intestinal obstruction, liver disease, septicemia, multi organ failure, leukemia, fever, asphyxia and old age/general debility. The age range flucuated between 43 and 94 years. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the last fortnight, in Bombay, was 79 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju-mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju-mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the breakup of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
