Pioneering eye care

"Today we can extract a cataract through an incision less than a millimeter and remove a spectacle number with absolute precision with the most advanced laser systems,” declared cataract and LASIK (Laser Insitu Keratomileusis) surgeon Dr Cyres Mehta on being presented the award of "Young Outstanding Indian for the Year 2005 – for the field of medicine.” The deputy chief minister of Maharashtra R. R. Patil and Dr B. K. Goyal presented Mehta the award at a function on September 27, 2005 at Bombay’s Y. B. Chavan Auditorium, notes a press release.
Director of the Mehta International Eye Institute and Supervision LASIK Center, Colaba, Bombay, Cyres is known to have many firsts to his credit being the pioneer of corneal wavefront guided LASIK in India where even the vision of damaged eyes can be salvaged. Additionally eyes that have already had corneal graft operations can be improved by this revolutionary system, states the write-up. He has performed thousands of laser and aqualase cataract surgeries and LASIK procedures during his career spanning five years, adds the press release.

Author of two international text books on cataract surgery and LASIK with more than 25 published book chapters and journal articles in international textbooks in India, Italy and USA, and over 170 paper presentations in USA, France, Italy, Cairo and Moscow, Mehta runs his own instruction course in advanced cataract surgery at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery every year. He is also the editor of the Indian Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
The Indian Intraocular Implant and Refractive Society had conferred a gold medal on Mehta as also the International Society of Glaucoma Surgeons, Switzerland, mentions the write-up.
