Milestones data primarily of the latter half of December 2006 are carried in this issue.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 22 and 31 years, the arithmetic mean (the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides) being 26 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 22 and 37 years, averaging at 29 years.

Thirty-two Zoroastrians were consigned to the Bombay Towers of Silence as versus five babies being born during the last 15 days of December. Heart disease took a toll of seven patients, five of whom were in the 80+ age category. Old age/general debility claimed five lives whereas four Zoroastrians each succumbed to pneumonia/lung diseases and cancer. Three victims fell prey to brain disease. Sepsis, kidney failure, Guillain-Barrz Syndrome, hypertension, leukemia, hemiparesis, hemiplegia and paraplegia (the last three, kinds of paralysis) were the isolated cases registered. A stillborn baby boy was lost to the community. A 101-year-old male also breathed his last. The youngest to perish was a 52-year-old lady. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the last 15 days of December, in Bombay, was 78 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju-mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
