Births, marriages and deaths taken place primarily in the former half of December 2006 are carried in this issue.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 22 and 43 years, the arithmetic mean (the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides) being 27 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 23 and 47 years, averaging at 29 years.

Forty Zoroastrians were consigned to the Bombay Towers of Silence as versus seven babies being born during the first 15 days of the last month of 2006. Heart disease took a toll of 10 patients, eight of whom were in the 80+ age category. Pneumonia/lung disease claimed nine victims whereas four Zoroastrians succumbed to septicemia. The other killers were old age/general debility (three) and cancer, hypertension and malaria (two each). The nine isolated cases were gastroenteritis, kidney failure, brain disease, multi organ failure, diabetes, head injury, tuberculosis, megacolon (condition of dilated and elongated colon) and hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body). The age range fluctuated between 41 and 96 years. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the last 15 days of November, in Bombay, was 80 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju-mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju-mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
