Patel's public petitions

For the third time in succession Dr Thrity Dinshaw Patel was appointed nominee member of the National Human Rights Commission, New Delhi for Nagpur Central Prison, notes a press release. This appointment is valid for a three-year period until 2008, as per a notification dated November 10, 2005. Dedicated to the cause of legal and human rights education Patel keeps filing public interest litigation for protecting the rights of prisoners and consumers, notes her life profile.

She has been given credit for pioneering new postgraduate courses in the Nagpur University’s Department of Law like Masters and Diploma in Human Rights and Duties Education, as also Consumer Law, Cyber Law and Information Technology. Patel was also instrumental in starting the Nagpur University Human Rights Cell in 1997. Recently she was elected on the Grievance Cell of the Nagpur University. A former senate member of the Nagpur University she has served as chairperson of the Board of Studies in Law and is also a member of its Academic Council and other bodies of the Nagpur and Amravati Universities.
With a vast teaching experience of 27 years Patel is the seniormost faculty member and head of the Department of Law, mentions the write-up giving her credit for being the first lady to pass LLM in Constitutional Law from the Nagpur University after which she earned her PhD from the Poona University and is now guiding other doctorate studies. Besides participating and organizing seminars, as also contributing articles to many books and journals, Patel has authored a book on Personal Liberty where the late jurist Nani Palkhi­vala had written the foreword.
Patel makes time for community activities and institutions too. For the last 12 years she has been vice president of the Nagpur Parsi Gymkhana and earlier she had served as the managing committee member of the Nagpur and Kamptee Parsi Zarthosti Anjuman for nearly 24 years. The keen educationist is also on the board of trustees of the J. N. Tata Parsi Girls High School and is a committee member of the Chanda Devi Saraf School in Nagpur.
