Milestones

Intercommunity marriages solumnized between September and December 2005 are carried herein. Births, marriages and deaths taken place in the community for the 15 day period of January 16 to 31, 2006 have also been included.

The interfaith marriages data is gleaned from the registers at the Old Customs House (OCH) at Fort and at the MHADA office in Bandra (East). However, names that could not be identified as Zoroastrian, have been omitted from the list.

The marriage officer at the OCH sanctioned 18 interfaith and three civil marriages, whereas 17 intercommunal and one civil union were registered at the MHADA office.

A scanning of the registers at the Chandanwadi crematorium at Marine Lines revealed the names of six Zoroastrians cremated in the four month period.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 22 and 30 years, the arithmetic mean (the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides) being 26 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 25 and 34 years, averaging at 29 years.

Six babies were born and 34 persons perished in the latter half of January. Six of the 12 patients who fell prey tp heart disease were above 80 years. Hypertension claimed four lives. Three victims each were lost to cancer and septicemia and two to pneumonia/lung disease. The 10 isolated causes of deaths were: haematemesis (vomiting of blood), sepsis, cystitic (inflammation of the bladder), bed sores, prostate, malnutrition, old age/general debility, anemia, multi organ failure and brain disease. A centenarian also breathed his last. The youngest age at death was 44 years. The Zoroastrian life extentancy at birth for the last 15 days of January, in Bombay, was 81 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the breakup of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
