Milestones
Births, marriages and deaths taken place in the latter half of May 2005 are published in this issue. Also included are marriages contracted outside the community during the period of January to April 2005. The names have been sourced from the Old Customs House (OCH) in Fort and the MHADA office in Bandra. However, names that could not be identified as Zoroastrian, have been omitted from the list.
The marriage registrar at the OCH solumnised 24 interfaith unions and six civil marriages. While the MHADA office registers revealed 14 intercommunity and one civil union for the four month period.
The Chandanwadi crematorium registers revealed the names of four Zoroastrian cremations between January and April.
The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 24 and 30 years, the arithmetic mean (the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides) being 26 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 22 and 33 years, averaging at 27 years.
The last 15 days of May witnessed the birth of four babies as versus 36 deaths. Of the 12 victims of heart disease, eight were octogenarians and nonagenarians. Pneumonia/lung disease took a toll of four lives. Three patients each fell prey to hypertension, old age/general debility and cancer. The nine isolated cases registered were septicemia, diabetes, tuberculosis, malnutrition, haematemesis (vomiting of blood), hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body), brain disease, asphyxia due to smothering and jaundice. The coroner’s report was still pending in the cases of two deaths. The age range fluctuated between 50 and 98 years. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for May 16-31, in Bombay, was 78 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju-mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju-mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the breakup of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
If readers have any births/marriages/deaths they would like published, some proof to ensure the veracity of the report would be required. We are sure our readers would appreciate this requirement and cooperate with us.
