Nanavati’s lost legacy
The first agiary-atash dadgah in Ahmedabad was established and declared open by Sheth Kharshedji Beramji Nanavati on August 6, 1846
with the cooperation of other leading Parsis of that time. This dadgah along with related buildings was handed over to the Parsi Panchayat on July 18, 1877. The original afringan bearing an inscription in Gujarati reading "Khashrobhaini Naiyate — Kharshedji Behramji Nanavati,” viz. ‘In sacred memory of Khashrobhai — Kharshedji Behramji Nanavati,’ is still maintained in the anteroom of the present agiary. However, no one in Ahmedabad is able to give any information about the said late Nanavati or his descendants. I am compiling notes on the Parsis of Ahmedabad from the time the first Parsi is said to have come here up to the present day and would be grateful if any of your readers could give me information in this regard. I can be contacted at 167 Sunrise Park, Bodakdev, Ahmedabad 380054; e-mail: medoraad1@sancharnet.in; tel: 6853114, 6855414.
