This issue of Parsiana carries Milestones data for the months of October and November 2002.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 21 and 39 years, the arithmetic mean (the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides) being 26 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 23 and 38 years, averaging at 28 years.

Forty-one births were registered for the two month period as compared to 136 deaths. Topping the list of killer diseases was that of the heart — 34 deaths (15 in the 80 and over age category + 19 others). Next came pneumonia and lung diseases claiming 17 lives, cancer (14), septicemia (nine) and old age/general debility (eight). Seven victims fell prey to brain disease and six to diabetes. Urinary tract infection took a toll of five lives. Four Zoroastrians each succum-bed to hypertension and kidney failure whereas two patients each died due to uremia, liver disease, anemia and gangrene. The count for isolated cases totalled 16 for October and November, they being: malaria, frac­ture, sepsis, Parkinson’s disease, hernia, dementia, schizophre­nia, myxoe-dema (clinical syndrome of hypothyroidism), multiple neuropathies (relating to diseases of the nervous system), asth­ma, myasthenia gravis (muscular weakness), polycythemia (increase in the number of circulating red blood cells), malnutrition, dehydration, hypercholesterolaemia (excessive cholesterol in the blood) and Alzheimer’s disease. The coroner’s report was kept pending in the case of one death. The community lost three still­born babies as also a 101-year-old. The Zoroastrian life expect­ancy at birth for the two month period, in Bombay, was 76 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju-mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju-mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to ill­nesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combi­nation of several diseases.
