Milestones

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 22 and 40 years, the arithmetic mean (the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides) being 28 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 29 and 41 years, averaging at 33 years.

There were 12 births recorded at the two hospitals in the month of July 2002 as versus 79 deaths at Doongerwadi. Seventeen of the 32 patients who succumbed to heart diseases were in the above 80 age bracket. Pneumonia/lung disease and cancer (11 patients each), old age/general debility (seven), diabetes and kidney failure (four each) and septicemia (three) were the other killers. Hyperglycaemia (excessive sugar in the blood), jaundice, brain disease, gastro-intestinal haemorrhage, liver disease, asthma, tuberculosis, cholecystitis (inflammation of the gall-bladder) and anemia were the nine isolated cases registered in July. Thirty-four years and 104 were the lowest and highest ages at death. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for July, in Bombay, was 78 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju-mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju-mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
