The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 22 and 25 years, the arithmetic mean (the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides) being 23 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 25 and 32 years, averaging at 29.

Eighty-four Zoroastrians were interred in Bombay’s Towers of Silence in October this year. On the other hand births numbered only nine. Eighteen of the 27 victims who succumbed to heart disease were octogenarians and nonagenarians. Lung disease/pneumonia took the lives of 12 patients whereas five Zoroastrians each fell prey to cancer, brain disease and septicemia. The other killers were old age/general debility (four), diabetes and hypertension (three each) and liver disease (two). Among the 17 isolated causes of deaths were: kidney failure, malaria, hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body), haematemesis (vomiting of blood), anemia, broncho­spastic disease (sudden constriction of the bronchial tubes), gastro-intestinal disease, malnutrition, hemiparesis (a slight paralysis or weakness of one half of the face or body), syringomyelia (an uncommon progressive disease of the nervous system of unknown cause), blood disease, Parkinson’s disease, gastritis, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, hy­po­ka­laemia (abnormally low potassium level of the blood), Alzheimer’s disease and asthma. The age range fluctuated between 48 and 97 years. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for October, in Bombay, was 78 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the breakup of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
