By Farrokh Jijina · August 7, 2016
Tata Power and its group companies’ spending on corporate social responsibilities (CSR) for the financial year ending March 2015 was Rs 47.02 crores, reports a media release dated July 4, 2016 from the company. With an emphasis on five areas — primary education with focus on girl child, health and drinking water, livelihood and employability, social capital and infrastructure, and inclusive growth, during the year, the company reached out to more than 250 villages/urban pockets across seven states, benefitting over 1.5 million people. The release states that the programs have been rolled out across plant locations and are undertaken through the developmental arm Tata Power Community Development Trust.
During the year, four state-of-the-art Tata Power Skill Development Institutes [which aim at "bridging (the) skill gap in the power sector through modular skill training of the youth and contract workers that will make them more employable, according to their website] commenced operations in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Jharkhand. Over 50,000 cumulative volunteering hours have been generated by employees in various community engagement initiatives. Reinforcing its commitment towards sustainability, the company planted over 7.5 lakh trees across their locations and supported natural disaster relief work at Nepal.
Vivek Talwar, chief sustainability officer of the company was quoted as stating the company’s focus on CSR has been on designing and deploying sustainable programs, where the community takes ownership of the programs in the true spirit of participatory development.
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) announced on its website on June 30, 2016 that it was recognized with the ‘Employee Engagement Project of the Year (EPY)’ and ‘Social Responsibility Project of the Year (SRPY)’ at the North American Employee Engagement Awards ceremony in Chicago on June 22, 2016. It was highlighted as the top company in two of only 16 categories and possible winners.
The media release states that TCS won the EPY for large public enterprise due to its culture of promoting employee engagement and employee development initiatives, among other aspects. The company won the SRPY "for its significant level of technology and employee volunteer investments,” particularly through its national computer science education advocacy. Their goIT program teaches coding, robotics and design to middle and high school students in schools across 32 cities in North America.
The awards showcase the best of North American businesses that think and work differently, in inspiring, recognizing and celebrating their people. Matt Manners, founder of the Employee Engagement Awards was quoted that "Entries in this year’s awards showed a marked improvement in the standard of work being done in North America to improve the employee experience.”
