“Countering interfaith…”

A chance encounter and perusal of "Countering interfaith…” (Readers’ Forum, Parsiana, May 21, 2016) has led me to respond. I could not agree more with Armin Dutia Motashaw of Ahmedabad. There are a couple of points I’d like to expand on: that conversion in Zoroastrianism is a sin; and that inter-community marriages are wrong in the eyes of God.
If conversion in the case of children of inter-married Parsi women is perfectly okay via the téko (support) of the navjote ceremony, why are such navjotes mostly performed in a "hush hush, not-to-be-revealed” manner? Why should one feel ashamed if one is not committing any sin? Or is one? If inter-community marriages are also okay, why go through the natak (drama) of having two ceremonies — one in the baug, openly, and later at the registrar’s office? And after going through all this, these people do not practice the Zoroastrian religion, because both the navjotes and marriages are merely for convenience sake! And later the sudreh and kusti are hung on a kheelo (nail) or khoontee (hook)! Parents and grandparents are not bothered, not to mention the priests, so why should the offspring care?
Finally, it’s hello inter-communityism and goodbye Zoroastrianism (nice knowing you)! "Kaansee kuseene, perbiroon laiyené/ Hamé thaya Parsi Zarathushti;/ Punthé énoon shoon parinaam thassé —/ Khoda jaané, ané énee aarsi! (We undergo stress and strain, receive cash gifts/ We become Parsi Zoroastrians;/ but what is the result of all this?/ Only God knows).” ADI F. MERCHANT
