First in Maths Olympiad

By Sherene Vakil · May 7, 2016
"The Junior Maths Olympiad, also known as JMO, is a very interesting exam for maths lovers because it focuses on logical and out-of-the box thinking rather than calculations or just mugging up formulae. There is no fixed method to solve a sum; there can be many different ways. In my opinion, this exam is really good as it lets you have ‘fun with sums’ while learning mathematics. The topics that we have for these exams are not taught in schools ever, stuff like Cryptography, Number Theory, Magic Squares, so on and so forth. I love being a part of these tests where they test us outside the math curriculum so well,” Sanaya Gandhi (pictured), 12, who was declared the Best Achiever from the Vasant Vihar School in Thana at the Junior Maths Olympiad 2016 informed Parsiana.
The Std VI student, who stood first class first at the primary level, received a certificate for having "participated and shown excellent performance” and was subsequently awarded the Ramanujan Scholarship, informs her uncle Vistasp Hodiwala of Underdog advertising, via email.
Gandhi, a good, intuitive learner, has regularly won accolades for all-round achievements for her studies as well as extra-curricular activities. She has a passion for mathematics and a natural flair for the subject. Though she doesn’t have any particular technique for studying, her commitment has never been in doubt. With her diverse range of interests which includes music, singing and her love for sports and the outdoors (she is an avid footballer too), she likes to keep a happy "studies-fun” balance to keep her batteries charged at all times, reveals the email.
Her parents, Zarineeta (née Bhesania) and Sachin have always encouraged her to appear for competitive exams which fall outside the purview of her regular studies from the time she was in Std III.
