Candidates for BPP fray?

By Sherene Vakil · February 21, 2016
So far only former Bombay Parsi Punchayet (BPP) trustee Arnavaz Mistry has stated she will be contesting the April 10, 2016 BPP trusteeship election. Another likely contender, Xerxes Dastur, who contested unsuccessfully in the October 2015 elections but made a strong showing, when asked by Parsiana whether he would be standing, replied: "Am thinking about it.” Rumors are afloat that BPP trustee Armaity Tirandaz whose seat falls vacant in April may consider re-contesting. She had earlier stated she would not seek reelection. A text message sent to her on February 3 inquiring about this elicited no response.

The election reportedly was originally scheduled for April 17 but as it would come in the middle of the long weekend the date was preponed to April 10. Registration for new voters was frozen for February 10, while the last date for candidates to file nominations is March 9. The results are expected to be announced after the polling on April 10.
Tenders have been invited for parties to manage the software and hardware for the polling to be done on electronic voting machines. For the 2015 elections for five trusteeship vacancies, Yazdi Tantra’s firm, On-Lyne Systems was appointed while the firm of Deloitte Haskins & Sells audited the polling procedures in 2015. At the last elections candidates complained that their representatives were not allowed to be present during the counting and tallying of votes. The elections are estimated to cost anywhere between Rs 15 to 25 lakhs.
Polling will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the following five centers: Cusrow Baug (Colaba), Khareghat Colony (Hughes Road), Dadar Parsi Gymkhana, Rustom Baug (Byculla) and Sir Shapurji Bharucha Baug (Andheri).
Mahiyar Dastoor has been named president for the election.
