New board in Poona
Roshan Eruch Chindhy, Hoshang Noshir Dorabjee, Polly Bhikaji Patel, Shahrukh Keku Irani, Adi Jehangir Engineer, Bahram Mehraban Pashutanizadeh and Yezdi Eruch Batliwalla took over as trustees of the Poona Parsi Panchayat (PPP) on April 2, 2013. The successful seven were elected from a slate of 16 candidates. Only Pashtunizadeh had served on the previous board. Trustees of the PPP are elected once in three years. Of a total of about 2,000 registered members of the PPP, only 600 voted this time.
The elections, scheduled for March 2, 2013, were postponed by a week to March 10. According to an email received from Mabrin Nanavatti, there was "fierce campaigning…with current trustees and the contesting candidates calling meetings and speaking to the residents and members of the Parsi colony at Lullanagar.” Yezdi Bomi Irani, a prominent lawyer, was appointed election officer.
"On March 2, 2013 an undated letter was being circulated informing members of a postponement of elections and reasons endorsing the same,” writes Nanavatti. It transpired that Engineer’s name had been "mistakenly included as a member of the new panel of candidates, whereas he had essentially joined the old trustees.” As a result of this misrepresentation, Engineer asked for some time to clear the confusion caused amongst the voters, Nanavatti notes.
Others contesting were Jehangir Rustomjee Daruwalla, Farokh Behram Irani, Rukhshana Gev Irani, Rashna Homi Kekobad, Pervez Ardeshir Kapadia, Comm Loveji Sorabji Mehta, Rumi Pestonjee Mehta, Parvez Pestonjee and Meherwan Faredoon Wadia.
