Byculla Club’s help
An appeal by the president of the Lions Club of Byculla, Capt Percy Master, elicited a favorable response to assist the residents of Damu Nagar slums in Kandivali, a northern suburb of Bombay. A fire on December 7, 2015 gutted over 2,000 shanties and several people were injured when over 25 cooking gas cylinders exploded. The Club members mustered up a sum in excess of Rs 85,000 to provide aid to the fire affected homeless. Essential items like mats (chatais), buckets, mugs and blankets were bought and distributed. Each inhabitant of the slums was additionally given five kilos of rice, one kilo of tur dal, two kilos of wheat flour, one kilo of sugar and a liter of cooking oil, mentions an email received by Parsiana. The Club, along with assistance from social worker Dr Mishra, had the supplies loaded onto several tempos for distribution to the fire victims at the site on December 12.
Earlier, the district governor had, on November 14, 2015, said that the Lions Club of Byculla is living up to its slogan, "Ushta te — happiness unto all,” when he along with his team and cabinet colleagues visited the Club. Master informed the gathering of well over 80 members and guests that during the first five months of the Lionistic year 2015-16 the Club had conducted 59 projects costing well over Rs 22 lakhs in the fields of education, health, hunger, environment and old age facilities. The Club had been awarded the Best Club Award during the October Service Week (see "Happiness in service,” Events and Personalities, Parsiana, November 7, 2015).
Newly elected Bombay Parsi Punchayet trustee and member of the Club Zarir Bhathena was felicitated and presented a plaque.
