The power to do good
In the lead-up to the recent Bombay Parsi Punchayet trusteeship elections the candidates were strong and clear on specifics in interviews and their advertisements. However, they failed to express their views on the larger issue of Zoroastrianism. While where we live, how we live, who we marry, what we wear next to our skin, etc are of practical value, to me the more vital matter is the continuance of the Zoroastrian philosophy.
All religions have to be viewed in the context of anthropology. With the growth of human settlements over time, religion became the outcome of curiosity. Today science increasingly satisfies the questions we were unable to answer earlier. All over, religion today is either a power base, ceremonial, or an anchor for the lesser intelligent, or at best, the remembrance of values that have now changed or eroded. We can move forward either because "God said so,” or "What is best for equitable growth, sustaining natural resources over time.”
Zarathushtrian essences thrive within the "goodness” we do for others. We need to recognize the power to do good within us rather than rely on rituals, beliefs, dogmas, prejudices, etc, albeit under the excuse of scholarship or priesthood. One must look for good individuals who will work under a code of governance, pushing the issue of "philosophy” to another era. NAWSHIR KHURODY
