As good as it gets
"One of the best results in the history of Britannia” is how chairman Nusli Wadia described the 56% increase in the company’s profit for the quarter ending June 2015, according to a report in The Economic Times (ET) of August 5, 2015. At Rs 168 crores, this represents a significant year-on-year jump in net profits for Britannia Industries Limited, the Calcutta based company which, according to its website, "delivers products in over five categories to more than half the Indian population.”

Wadia is reported to have stated that "the compounded annual growth rate of revenue in the past two years has been around 12.6%, which has been good considering …other FMCG (fast moving consumer goods) companies could not grow as much.” The chairman was quoted as stating that the company is looking to spend Rs 500 crores on capital expenditure this financial year, as part of a substantial investment plan, "since it is confident of strong growth.” Plans include setting up two new plants in Bangalore and Erode in South India.
The company is reported to have added 85,000 new outlets to its network, and "plans to invade each and every village in three years.” With the increased reach comes an additional focus on food safety. Wadia is reported to have said that this is imperative because "there is not much control on raw materials and food standards in India like elsewhere in the world.”
