“Errors in prayer books”
With reference to Ratan Damanwala’s letter ("Errors in prayer books,” Readers’ Forum, Parsiana, June 21, 2015), I agree that in our prayer books there are many typographical errors and steps need to be taken to rectify them. In Gujarati versions the confusion is created by the letters ‘Gh’ and ‘Dh.’ Anyway, not knowing the Avesta language I do not understand what difference it makes to the meanings of the words.
It is a fact that most Zarthoshtis pray without knowing the true meaning of what is in our prayer books. But praying is a way of devoting one’s mind to the existence of Ahura Mazda and I feel one need not know the full meaning. However, as Damanwala has suggested, some effort needs to be made to enlighten us about what we are actually praying.
