“Errors in prayer books”
Some people must add mystique to their religion. Perhaps they are unable to appreciate the message of a prayer in its pure form. One such person appears to be Cyrus Meherji who, in his letter under "Errors in prayer books” (Readers’ Forum, Parsiana, November 21, 2015) must add the un-Zardusti belief of Stoat Yasna, the science of sound, and the vibratory power of our prayers. He claims that certain portions of our prayers must be said in baaj because those portions "interfere with the vibratory effects of the portion prayed before.”
In the English translation (by Prof Ervad Maneck Furdoonji Kanga) of Ervad Kavasji Edulji Kanga’s Khordeh Avesta Ba Mayeni (1880), this is the footnote on page 39: "This entire portion to be murmured is in Pazand. The reason being it is the Pazand language, which is different from that of the Avesta. Therefore it cannot be prayed loudly. This is so done as recitation of a certain portion of the Avesta is left out after reciting the Pazand portion. Whatever Pazand passages that occur before the Avestan text or at its end are not to be recited in murmur but are recited loudly.”
Lacking in mystique and in elegance, but a learned reason for the use of baaj in our prayers! NAWSHIR MIRZA
