Cricket clubs of yore
Reader Ardeshir Damania of California sent Parsiana this vintage photograph of winners of the Parsi Venus cricket club’s beauty contest. Winner Nurgish Daroowala is in the center, flanked by runners-up Freny Mistry and Dolly Siganporia who are to her right and left respectively. The shot was taken by the photographer of EOS Studio in Bombay on February 26, 1960. Damania feels it would be interesting if readers could trace these ladies and provide their current photographs for comparison 55 years later!
According to Damania, Parsi Venus was started around 1900 though he does not know where the club had its premises. He also quotes from the book Sport in Asian Society — Past and Present: "By 1910 the number of Parsi (cricket) clubs had increased considerably leading to an introduction of an inter-Parsi club tournament called the Shapur Spencer Cricket Challenge Cup. The Elphinstone Cricket Club, Baronet, Young Zoroastrian, Sassanian, Marine Liberal, John Bright, Navroze Baugh, Esplanade Liberals, Dadar Parsi Colony, Parsee Engineers, Prince Rising Star, Parsi Venus, Lancelot and The Parsi Cyclists among others, all took part in the Shapur Spencer Cricket Tournament.”
For readers who are interested, further information would be available in Parsis and Sports by Hormusji Dhunjishaw Darukhanawala.
