Tsunami in Bombay
On November 28, 1945, coastlines surrounding the northwestern Indian Ocean witnessed a tsunami as a result of a magnitude 8 earthquake off the coast of (present day) Iran and Pakistan. A few hundred lives were lost then and in order to improve public awareness in the region UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) is presently coordinating a multinational effort. Scientists have been recruited from India, Iran, Oman and Pakistan to collect evidence of this tsunami, from eyewitnesses and from newspaper stories, administrative documents, census data, logs of rescue and relief vessels, aerial photographs, intelligence reports, and personal diaries.
In India, newspapers reported a tidal wave that hit the coasts of Bombay and Gujarat that November morning in 1945. We are looking for eyewitnesses or for contemporaneous documentation of the event. Those willing to share their recollections or records may please write to tsunami.reports@gmail.com or call +919663984727. VANESSA ANDRADE
