Published in this Milestones column are births, marriages and deaths that occurred in the second fortnight of July 2013.
Based on the information from one south Bombay hospital and families who send us copies of birth certificates there was only one baby born during this period as versus deaths numbering 35!
Seven of the 12 victims who succumbed to diseases of the heart were over 80 years. Other fatal causes of deaths were: pneumonia/lung disease (five), kidney failure (four), liver disease, multi organ failure, old age/general debility and dementia (deterioration of mental faculties) (two each) and intestinal obstruction, brain disease, sepsis, vivax malaria, asthma and diabetes (one each).The eldest and youngest to perish were both females: one, a year short of her century, the other, a year short of her half century. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for July 16-31 in Bombay, was 81 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
