“Camouflaged tenancies”
While Jehangir Gai has found a legal loophole in "Camouflaged tenancies” (Parsiana, June 21, 2013) and the Bombay Parsi Punchayet (BPP) was caught napping in the matter of renewal of leave and licence agreements, I read Behram Aga’s letter on the subject (Readers’ Forum, Parsiana, July 21, 2013) with some exasperation.
I do not know why he, in his great wisdom, refers to all Parsis as panchchamboodhiya akkal na dooshman palav-daar Parsis (wise after the event, enemies of reason, food loving Parsis). Is he insulting our collective intelligence as a community or merely demonstrating his arrogance?
At the end he says: "Beechara (unfortunate) Jerbai (Wadia) and Muncherjee Khareghat may be weeping buckets at what is going on. The BPP is no longer a charitable institution but a commercial organization.” To this I would have only one thing to say — people get the rulers they deserve. And we have elected the BPP trustees through adult franchise!
There are Parsis owning three cars per family and earning lakhs of rupees who live in "charitable” baugs, paying Rs 600 or so as rent each month. They refuse to pay parking charges or contribute towards building repairs. Pray, why are these rich Parsis (not sure if you would still call them panchchamboodhiya) living off charity? Aren’t they usurping flats that should rightfully belong to the poor? Is this not commercial exploitation of the BPP by these tenants? Or do you believe that there are no poor Parsis?
