Police gym at Gamdevi
On the auspicious occasion of Gudi Padwa, the Maharashtrian New Year which fell on April 11, 2013, holistic health proponent Mickey Mehta and Commissioner of Bombay Police Dr Satya Pal Singh launched a gym for police personnel at the Gamdevi Police Station. Well known fitness icons industrialist Yash Birla and actor/hotelier Suniel Shetty were present, mentions a write-up received from Heal the world, Mehta’s initiative. For the first time in the country, a nongovernment authority has sponsored a gym for police personnel as Mehta wishes to bring into focus the need for a growing wellness quotient in the police force. Earlier, he had trained some of the top brass of the Indian Police Service.
Pradeep Lonandkar, who is in charge of the police station sought Mehta’s support to create a facility for his colleagues, and now the 41 officers and 153 constables attached to the Gamdevi Police Station have a small but decent and fully equipped gym where they can work out and practice yoga for de-stressing, meditation and prayer. It is Mehta’s hope that other corporations will come forward to sponsor gyms/wellness centers at police stations all over the country to improve the wellbeing of the force, the write-up notes.
