Culinary coup

Anahita Navroze Dhondy of Delhi topped the 2012 batch for BA Honors in Culinary Arts offered by the Institute of Hotel Management, Aurangabad (IHM-A), winning the highest number of awards that any individual student had ever won in the history of the Institute, mentions an email received by Parsiana from Veera F. Mavalwala, joint secretary of the Delhi Parsi Anjuman. At the convocation and graduation ceremony in Aurangabad on February 25, 2013 she received a gold medal, trophy and certificate for standing first, the Dr Rafiq Zakaria Trophy and certificate for all round excellence, awards in human resource management, for being the best over four years in culinary arts, for best performance in research and food production operations.
The IHM-A was set up as a collaboration between the late Dr Rafiq Zakaria’s Maulana Azad Education Trust and Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces, notes the Institute’s website. Present at the convocation were Fatima Zakaria, chairperson of Maulana Azad Education Trust, Raymond Bickson, managing director of Taj Hotels, Dr Satish Jeyram, principal of IHM-A and Prof Colin Bamford of the University of Huddersfield, UK which is also affiliated to the IHM-A.
Dhondy is now pursuing her master’s degree at London’s Le Cordon Bleu and has been scoring well in her early semesters, the email reveals. Born and educated in Delhi, she attended Springdales School, completing her Standard XII with 88.8 percent marks, topping in sociology and political science with distinction in economics, home science and art. Art captain of her school, Dhondy received the Ram Avinash Sethi award for the best artist of the year, 2008 in addition to winning many inter-school competitions. Part of the school choir, she has performed at the Gandhi Smriti, and choreographed various song and dance shows for her school. She was sent to China as part of the school exchange program. Actively involved in all extra-curricular activities, Dhondy was secretary of the Africa Club, creative head and member of various clubs and of the literacy program of the school. In college she participated in the music and theater teams.
Dhondy, who turns 23 on May 23, 2013, evinced a passion for baking from an early age. Her mother Nilufer is a chef well known for her home baking and cuisine. Father Navroze’s field is advertising, media and communication. Having worked for agencies like Lintas, JWT and Percept, he now runs his own company, Creatigies. Dhondy’s brother Kurush is also an artist and has just appeared for his Standard XII examination, the email reveals.
