Play Centre’s celebration

When The Nowroze Baug Play Centre (NBPC) completed 66 years of providing multipurpose social welfare, celebrations were in order. The over 400 persons gathered at the NBPC grounds in Lalbaug were treated to Udaan, a musical entertainment, both vocal and instrumental, by visually impaired performers, Yasmin Engineer, NBPC joint general secretary informed Parsiana via email. Over a dozen artistes, including the physically handicapped displayed yoga asanas balancing lighted candles on their foreheads.
Chief guest oncologist Dr Marzi Mehta was accompanied by his wife Niloufer. Other dignitaries included Bombay Parsi Punchayet (BPP) chairman Dinshaw Mehta with wife Pansy, World Zoroastrian Organisation Trust Funds managing trustee Dinshaw Tamboly and wife Bachi, social activists Jimi and Mithoo Jesia, BPP trustee Armaity Tirandaz and Dhun Gagrat at the main program on November 3, 2012, while the anniversary on October 28 was marked by a jashan held at the nearby M. J. Wadia Agiary, notes the write-up.
Homi P. Ustad, president NBPC welcomed the chief guest, sketching the gold medalist’s career from the completion of MBBS to surgeon specializing in lung and throat cancer who will shortly proceed to Melbourne, Australia for training in thoracic surgery. Dr Marzi Mehta motivated the young scholars, encouraging them to excel in the field of their choice. He counseled parents never to compare their child’s academic progress with that of the neighbor’s child. He acknowledged the help of Nariman Mehta, former president of NBPC and offered him flowers. He also thanked his mother Roshan, father Godrej and wife for their support, notes the write-up. Prizes and scholarships were distributed by the doctor, Tirandaz and Dinshaw Mehta (who had donated all the cash prizes, as in the past, in memory of his late father Rusi).
Kayanush H. Patel of the J. B. Petit High School for Girls received the Late Khody P. Kolah All Parsi Open Merit Scholarship Prize on securing 96.2 percent in the ICSE examination, while Taronish N. Borzu of St Mary’s High School in Dahanu was similarly honored for obtaining 94.36 percent in the SSC examination. Cash prizes and pure silver medals were presented. Meritorious students from Std I to X, college students, graduates and postgraduates who secured a first class in the annual examination held in March 2012 were awarded internal prizes. The Late Mrs Shirinbai and Mr Ratansha Sahuraja Prize for a Parsi student of Bombay University for securing the highest marks in the final BCom examination of 2012 was received by Mehernaz D. Panthaki (88.86 percent) of the Byramjee Jeejeebhoy College of Commerce. She also received a silver medal. The write-up mentions that a special prize was presented to Dhun S. Kalagopi for proficiency in the architecture examinations.
Bollywood dances by the talented children of NBPC were choreographed by Benaz Ruwala and Mafrin Kharadi. Armin Bavan, joint cultural secretary, Engineer and Ustad were thanked as was Cyrus Siganporia who had organized the dinner catered by Tanaz Godiwalla.
