For the “common good”

By Sherene Vakil · January 7, 2013
Kerfegar B. Antia, chairman and managing director of The People’s Co-operative Credit Society Limited, Hyderabad, presented a cheque of Rs 62,800 to the Bai Ratanbai J. Chenoy Parsi High School toward payment of school fees for eight deserving students at a function in connection with Children’s Day, November 14. The Society also presented a cheque for Rs 5,000 towards teachers’ welfare, reveals a write-up received by Parsiana from Khushroo F. Toorkey, vice chairman of the Society.
Established on January 29, 2001 by a few retired officials of the Bank of India to help senior citizens receive reasonable interest on their deposits, the Society’s membership stood at 1,943 on March 31, 2012. Many members, of whom there are a number of Zoroastrians from the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, are senior citizens and widows. Interest on deposits is paid promptly every month to take care of their expenditure. The Society also gives loans at low rates of interest to salaried employees, gold loans, and money to construct a dwelling against mortgage of land.
Every year the Society earmarks five percent of its profits toward a "Common good fund.” It is from this fund that the Society presented the cheques on Children’s Day. Additionally, cheques aggregating Rs 1,40,000 were distributed to various organizations providing treatment to leprosy/HIV afflicted patients, for education of mentally challenged children and the welfare of street children, the write-up concludes.
