Balance sheet of life

The last day of each year is the Vahishtoisht Gatha (Pateti day) when we have to audit the balance sheet of our lives and examine what the profits and losses, advantages and disadvantages are. What have we invested and what have we wasted? How far have we been engrossed in worldly pleasures and taken interest in the soul? We should seek answers from our conscience.
An old man of 92 was asked his age. He replied that he was only five years old, because it was only during this period that he had utilized his life in a Zoroastrian manner. His past life had been wasted in worldly pleasures which were of no use to anyone.
Achievements have a very wide range. It is gain, profit, earning, credit, awards and laurels, advantages, appreciations, investments, benefits, etc? Looking to our attainments we are losers in the balance sheet account. Man is tempted to accumulate more wealth and possessions and not care for the soul’s upliftment. Real achievement is inner strength and Ushta, joy of the soul. Anger, higher standards, enmity, revenge, pride and ego have negative influence. This realization often comes too late for repentance.
The supreme achievement is birth in the Zarthoshti faith, in which we can take pride. To have a dedicated, devoted loving life partner with understanding is the best achievement and a blessing as are obedient loving progeny. Honest, diligent, talented business partners are also rare. God fearing, honest domestic help are a boon in Parsi homes. A healthy life without tension is a coveted achievement. Inspiration and guidance from spiritual centers are unique achievements. Confidence and firm will help us progress.
I am lucky to have achieved some awards in appreciation of my humble service to my community, the best being the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award which I dedicate to my guiding master. Achievements are the products of our efforts, sincere dedication and determination.
There is a reference in our religion to geti-kharld, values that may help us for the progress of our soul after death. We must understand occult spiritual karmic consequences. Such learning is also an achievement. Karmic laws are evergreen Ashavahista (the reward of ashoi).
May we get memorable moments in our life, for righteous behavior, with humility, prestige and humanity! Let vohu mana, the good mind guide us to live a useful life to enhance insight and love for all for a peaceful life.
